Target (March 2025) |
Become water positive |
Progress (March 22) | Reduced specific water consumption by 43% |
---|
We aspire to achieve a status of net zero carbon emissions. This means balancing a measured amount of carbon that is released into the environment with an equivalent amount offset
Water positivity means returning to the planet more water than we consume while manufacturing our products. We are aiming to achieve water positivity by implementing the 3R strategy of reduce, reuse
and recycle
We are working to reduce hazardous and solid waste generation, increase recycling of waste, and ensure that the waste generated at our sites is not sent to landfill
We are reducing the energy consumed to manufacture each unit of our products by 30 per cent, through process re-engineering, energy conservation and
efficiency projects
We are aiming to substitute 30 per cent of our total energy consumption with renewable sources such as solar, wind and biomass. We are investing in renewable technology and procuring green power

MoreChemical business is an energy intensive business. All our processes are aligned to improve energy efficiency that helps us in our goal to reduce specific energy and in turn our overall carbon footprint. Our flagship manufacturing plant in Valia was recently certified ISO 50001:2018 (EnMS) and our Ambernath plant is under process of Responsible Care certification. We constantly invest in new and innovative green technologies. One such example is the heat recovery unit in our
sulphonation plant.
Intervention:
We installed a novel heat exchanger in one of our detergent plant to recover energy going to stack to heat demineralized water for boiler.
This gas to water novel heat exchanger has high heat transfer coefficient and also requires around 70% less volume than the conventional one. The system is IOT-enabled, with continuous monitoring and reporting to study the performance and health of the system.
With this initiative, we are able to mitigate 1,300 MT of CO2 per annum.
To increase our renewable energy portfolio,
we utilise manufacturing by-products in
energy production, use biomass briquettes,
and solar energy.
To increase our renewable energy portfolio, we utilise manufacturing by-products in energy production, use biomass briquettes, and solar energy.
Intervention:
Since FY15, we started replacing natural gas with biomass briquettes to fulfil our thermal energy demand. Additionally, our manufacturing plants have solar installations of 315 KWp in Valia and 189 KWp in Ambernath. Currently, 50% of energy that we consume is from renewable sources.
Both our manufacturing sites at Valia and Ambernath are zero liquid discharge
facilities (ZLD).
Both our manufacturing sites at Valia and Ambernath are zero liquid discharge facilities (ZLD). We treat waste water in our water treatment plants and reuse the same in our process. We have also reduced our dependency on fresh water consumption by installing condensate recovery systems and reusing the water in the process. Recently, our Valia plant has installed fourth stage in reverse osmosis plant of 20 m3/hr, which shall help to reduce our freshwater consumption
even more.
Water is a primal part of our operations and one of our key material aspects. We continually evaluate and implement innovative projects
MoreWater is a primal part of our operations and one of our key material aspects. We continually evaluate and implement innovative projects to reduce specific water consumption and to recycle and
reuse water.
Intervention:
Our BacComber project is unique in saving water as well as energy. The system compromises of electromagnetism and ionisation process to treat water with no added chemicals. Its effective in controlling bacteria, algae & slime, corrosion and scale formation. It has higher cycle of concentration than conventional system and saves energy with better controlling scale.
We ensure a conscious use of materials and manufacturing processes that produces
minimal waste.
We ensure a conscious use of materials and manufacturing processes that produces minimal waste. Currently, we are testing waste to energy technologies to help us manage our chemical and industrial wastes through plasma gasification process. We are conscious about our plastic waste and are working on our extended producer responsibility (EPR).
Intervention:
We have installed a poly house to reduce the moisture of effluent treatment plant sludge. Poly house works on greenhouse gas concept. The wet sludge is placed inside the poly house and it entraps heat that ensures faster drying of sludge than conventional sun drying. This has helped us reduce the drying time of sludge after mechanical dryer from 15-20 days to 5-7 days on average with moisture reduction from 75% to 25% approximately.
At our Ambernath Plant, due to limitation of space, we have installed a paddle dryer to effectively remove moisture of sludge. The dryer has high heat energy utilization rate. It utilises energy from steam to dry sludge with 85% moisture content to an average of 10% moisture final output. This has helped us to considerably reduce the weight of final sludge to landfill.
